兒子：爸爸，什麼是白痴？

Dad: An idiot is a person who tries to explain his ideas in such a strange and long way that another person who is listening to him can't understand him. Do you understand me? 
父親：白痴就是一個試圖以很奇怪、很宂長的方式解釋他的想法，以致於另一個聽他說話的人無法理解他。你了解我說的嗎？

Son: No.
兒子：不了解！

【笑話解說】
在這則笑話中，兒子問父親什麼是白痴？（What is an idiot?）因為聽白痴說話總讓人覺得不知所云，所以父親就說「白痴就是一個試圖以很奇怪、很宂長的方式解釋他的想法，以致於另一個聽他說話的人無法理解他。」

但父親卻是以「好幾個子句結合成一個直述句」的冗長方式來解釋，結果兒子還是不懂，那麼「笑點」就在於隱喻父親「說人說自己」囉！

【句型解說】
讓我們從句型結構上來解析這位父親的「白痴語句」！

An idiot is a person 主要子句

who tries to explain his ideas in such a strange and long way 形容詞子句

that another person who is listening to him can't understand him. 名詞子句

最後一個名詞子句中，又有who is…所引導的形容詞子句，作為another person的後位修飾。

如果將這位父親的冗長句，改寫成以兩個完整句子說出的語句，他的兒子應該就容易理解了：

1. An idiot usually tries to explain his ideas in such a strange and long way.

2. Another person is listening to the idiot, but can’t understand him.

英文句子之所以變的很長、很複雜，一言以蔽之，就是由於「名詞加上後位修飾」的緣故。本長句中，其實就是因為以下兩個名詞 a person 以及 another person作了後位修飾，如下：

1. a person who tries to explain his ideas in such a strange and long way 一個試圖以很奇怪、很宂長的方式解釋他想法的人

2. another person who is listening to him 另外一個正在聽他說話的人
